Sneak Peek: My Spring Living Room

By 03/11/2012January 28th, 201713 Comments

My photographer is coming to shoot my house tomorrow. You’ve seen the holiday photos but this will be minus the Christmas decor!

Photos by Maria Killam

It’s too dark for me to photograph on my own and requires professional lighting (it’s why we’re moving, more on that soon). It’s amazing how fast I suddenly made decisions today as I ran around like a madwoman shopping for finishing touches and the coffee table I’ve wanted to replace the white ottoman in my living room.

I bought the throw I’ve wrapped on the back of my sofa at High Point Market when I was there fall 2010. I think I like it there! We’ll see how it looks in the real photos tomorrow!

See the white pillow? I bought it from IKEA today for under $10.00. Thick textured cotton, I love it! The other pillow in Kelly Wearstler Schumacher fabric was considerably more than that!  Remember if you have white in your decor, white pillows are a no-brainer on your sofa. You can buy the inserts there as well.

Wish me luck, we’re going to be photographing the whole townhouse in the next couple days!

Happy Monday! xo Maria

  • Oh no, moving! You seem to have just gotten settle in this place. But it will probably be for the better in the long run – I just don’t envy the work ahead of you.

Have fun today – how cool to have a professional shoot the house. But indoor shots always look so drab – not enough lighting.

Um I don’t think Maria is moving. The ‘moving’ post was an older update (2010) that relates to this post.

        Forget that…I was wrong..didn’t read it properly..she is moving..sorry!

The body of the blog says she’s moving:
“….requires professional lighting (it’s why we’re moving, more on that soon).”

Photo shoots are exciting and maddening since you suddenly realize that every little detail requires attention! It’s going to be beautiful Maria. Can’t wait to see it in the glossies!

Another right on post for me, Maria.

You mentioned that it’s “too dark” and “that’s why we’re moving”. Just moved out of our light-filled Sun City West, AZ home to sell it. Had to make a quick decision for temp lodging – quick is never good. Completely zoned out on fact that I’ve been in a house with lots of windows and a NE/SW exposure for 9 years and previously garden-style or corner units in small apartment projects. Now I’m in a big-apartment-style condo with one exposure – east. The half of the apartment towards the front door is always black including kitchen, and the east-facing side is blinding in the morning sun and then dingy dim the rest of the day. Here ’til mid of Jan 2013 but you can bet I’m looking seriously at more than one exposure and the right ones for the next place. Of course there’s the challenge and fun of redoing things now and then again in the new “new place”. Eager to see your pictures and eager to see where you land next. Green (the very right shade – I can see it in your pillows) is my color now but I’ve really gotten into your wonderful yellow too. Good luck with your shoot!

  • So much fun to get to see part of your house. It looks amazing and you will love the professional photos. They really do make such a difference! Thanks for sharing!

  • Light filled rooms are really important for our moods. I always work better when I’m sitting in my sunny living room in the morning, or my dining room in the afternoon. Thank heaven for laptops so I can follow the light!

  • Maria,
Your room is beautiful! I have the same problem with lighting in my home. I want to photograph my rooms for my blog, but they’re always so dark. Moving is a good idea. Good luck with your pics. Can’t wait to see them.

Especially in a cold climate, natural light is so critical.
I would opt for lots of southern exposure, maybe high walls with windows and/or skylites! The most sun-filled room in our house is the dinning room–so, we are going to move some comfortable chairs in there.
Interestingly, during a family reunion a few years ago, we had an almost empty, but sun-filled room on one side of our house. Everyday, most all of the children
    navigated to that room!!
Hope you find a light-filled, “Happy” space to live Maria!!!

Lovely! I really like the shape of your coffee table…and your table scape is so lovely! Hope we’ll get a peak of the photos from the shoot!

    Happy Monday!
