Fall Fashion in Seattle with Elizabeth & Maria

Elizabeth Jacobs

Every Fall, Elizabeth and I go to Seattle for the weekend to do some shopping. It’s always beautiful and sunny and we love the restaurants there. We had fabulous meals, everywhere.

Plus I introduced her to Chipotles where we had lunch on the way down as well as Sunday! So fresh and yummy.

Our first stop was Lululemon at the Outlet store in Burlington.

{Henley} {Cropped Pants}{Racer Tank}

We both picked up the crops, so comfortable and fun to have a navy work-out bottom since most of mine are black. I also loved the striped tank, wasn’t too form fitting. The Henley top fabric was sooo soft, just like they say on-line.

{Red Puffer} {White Jeans} {Born Boots}

Elizabeth has a great red puffer jacket that she wore the whole time (similar to above) and we both bought the white skinny jeans from J. Crew.

White looks so graphic and fresh with colour, and they are dressier than regular jeans.

Then she found the Born boots when we were a Nordstrom and didn’t take them off again (first image) they were so comfortable!

{Messenger Bag} {Girlfriend Jeans} {Turtleneck Sweater}

I bought boyfriend jeans very similar to these (above) at White House Black Market last year and I have worn them so much, they are so comfortable.

I’ve also been looking for colourful turtlenecks but there is NO COLOUR out there. Everything is emerald (not for me) and burgundy (same thing). So I bought this toffee coloured one at the Gap along with a raspberry crew neck.

Have you noticed what horrible quality most sweaters are! It’s really hard to find anything without acrylic in it (which pills immediately as you know) these were 100% merino wool.

I also picked up a Michael Kors cross body bag because I needed a smaller bag for especially these kinds of trips when you’re walking around all day and don’t want to carry a big purse.

{Cardigan} {studs} {UGG Boots}

Two years ago, my friend Irene Frazer bought me a pair of UGG boots when she was in Australia. I LOVED them. And I’ve worn them constantly almost to the point of embarrassment when I’m caught in the mud or rain.

I have a cognac coloured cardigan similar to the one above and it’s what you’ll find me in most days when I’m working in the studio behind my house.

Anyway, Elizabeth finally bought a pair when we were out this weekend, I thought mine were still just fine until I got home and looked at them–eeeeek. Kind of old and worn.

Traci Zeller was wearing these little Tori Burch studs at High Point last month, she said she got them in a SWAG bag and she said she wore them so much she also bought a silver pair.

Elizabeth & Maria

See my sisters glowing and tanned face? Lately, people keep asking her if she’s been on vacation.

Well, I’m here to tell you that she has not. My sister is a green smoothie freak! Her smoothies are so stuffed with greens, you can’t call them a smoothie because they are so hard to drink – yuk!

She’s been making green smoothies religiously and daily for three years now and here is the lovely and healthy result! All you have to do is compare her face to mine.

Here is one of her recipes:

1 Grapefruit

1/2 Banana

4 Cups of Packed Greens, For example, kale, beet greens, dandelions, parsley, carrot tops, swiss chard, stinging nettles and spinach.

1 Cup of Water

2 Cups of Ice

What did I tell you?? Gross right? I chuckle when I read smoothie recipes on line where people are talking about a few spinach leaves and then the rest of it is just a mountain of fruit and berries.

Sadly, I do not have this kind of discipline. But looking at her example, I just might, very soon! I’ll start tomorrow, ha!

Hope you have a wonderful week! xo Maria

Looks like you had a great time!

Will the white e-book be out before xmas? I want to buy it… for myself. xo

    • Brenda Schmidt says:

I can hardly wait for the e-book myself! it’s the middle of November so….SOON, I hope!

  • Lucy HAINES says:

So glad to hear that so many people are drinking green smoothies. I have been drinking one a day for over 20 years and at my ripe old age, I have more energy than people half my age. They really are good for you Maria. You must try them. Put a banana in with the greens and it takes away the bitterness.

Sound like you had a wonderful time in Seattle and you both look beautiful!

  • Bonnie says:

Thanks for the smoothie recipe and what great wardrobe basics to go on the hunt for.

  • mairi says:

Hey, I’m with Elizabeth on the green smoothie thing! Was doing that for years since I grow my own greens and now I skip the smoothie step and just drink straight juice from the greens with a bit of lemon juice to cut the bitterness. From a wheelbarrow load of mostly kale I can get 1.5 litres of pure juice from my heavy duty Omega juicer. Then I freeze it in muffin or ice cube trays and ziploc the ‘pucks’ for later use. One of these a day (under 1/4 cup) and I have energy plus! It’s all in the micro-nutrients and so easy. Kale grows all winter with some protection.
I have the same clover earrings in silver, sweet design. Thanks Maria for the fashion tips!

    • Maria Killam says:

Yes I forgot to mention she has an omega juicer too. Well I have one as well, but I’m not as diligent. I agree, way easier to get the greens down that way!
Our Kale starts growing again in February!

  • beth says:

Both my sisters live near that outlet mail, so we often go when I visit from So Cal. Enjoy your great purchases!

  • Arlene says:

Another great post Maria. When I see the clothes you have chosen I think if only she had this piece or that piece of Color by Amber jewellery which is fun, fashionable, fabulous Eco friendly looking great with gym clothes to a wedding. Each piece has a story. It has been in Canada for 10 weeks and handcrafted in USA. Check it out http://www.ashields.mycolorbyamber.com

    You are both so beautiful!
Honestly, I’m addicted to my green smoothies. I’ve not tried grapefruit though so am looking forward to the round in my kitchen…and I agree…you need more than a few green leaves to really call it a green smoothie:)

  • sandyc says:

Don’t dismiss the green smoothies – they may look gross but they don’t have to taste that way and there are healthy but yummy recipes out there that fall between a crop of greens & a sliver of fruit and a few green leaves & a crop of fruit and berries. Elizabeth looks very vibrant and she could easily be a model in that first pic.

As far as the clothes, can’t really relate to boots and jackets here in the SCW/Phoenix, AZ desert. Now that I no longer travel to Portland, OR with my late husband, don’t even know where my one jacket is and don’t think I kept my boots. Totally agree with you about sweaters though – very hard to find anything that’s not acrylic, and wool doesn’t work so well in our climate. Love 100% cotton including heavy-duty cotton but hard to find except occasionally in men’s sweaters.

Love the clothes you bought and I can visualize you in them. Take some pix and model for us.

  • KJ says:

Agree on the sweater; I absolutely will not buy any with acrylic. Why not just burn your money … totally worthless. Why do they keep making those? Let’s all band together and never buy another sweater with acrylic in it!

  • Scarlett says:

Just the mention of acrylic turtlenecks gives me hives! I love anything with bamboo in it – hard to find but so lovely. I find sometimes Free People is a good brand for great tops.
Love the Born boots too! So cute!

  • Elara says:

Looks like you had a great time:)

  • Jill says:

If you ever go to the UK you can buy quality acrylic sweaters from Marks & Spencer’s ‘Per Una’
Also good quality acrylic from the high street store ‘Next’ I have sweaters from both these stores for over 5 years and there isn’t a single pull.

  • Paula says:

You cracked me up talking about your sister’s smoothies. I couldn’t agree with you more on the whole smoothie situation.

  • I felt like I was there shopping with you girls! What a fun weekend!! oxox

  • Barbara says:

I read a blog post recommending this book, right before yours. What a different outlook to life….

For great skin at low cost, there is one word: NeoStrata (Canadian). Its pretty amazing.

  • Deb Bruna says:

LL Bean has great quality heavy cotton sweaters. I found two sweaters for myself in bright colors, recently. Love them. The men’s clothes I have ordered have also been as wonderful. Everything is well made and washes well. Prices are so reasonable.

  • Deb Bruna says:

You should frames that pic of you and Elizabeth and give it to your mom for Christmas. You both look fabulous.

  • cathy gibson says:

I think you both have beautiful skin! Thanks Maria for the smoothie recipe. I have made it twice now and I am hooked! It feels good to drink something so good for you 🙂

  • Betsy OShea says:

Beautiful photo of both of you! Ever since the financial crash the price of natural fabrics; cotton, silk and wool have skyrocketed! Thus everything is made w part synthetics now, it’s awful. You have to pay a fortune to get 100% natural. But you’re right…acrylic not only pills but shrinks badly as well.

  • So how many times have you worn your Tory Burch earrings since you bought them? Because at full price, I swear my cost per wear would still be pennies!!
