Who is Driving your Career?

By 03/15/2011January 22nd, 20186 Comments

Think back to an experience in your life, when you were young and sitting in the backseat. Who was driving?  What were you doing? You could coast, hang out and harass the person driving, but they still determined where you were going.  There’s parts of our life where we’re in the back seat but whoever is driving still determines the outcome.

‘If you are in the backseat, you are just along for the ride so if you aren’t doing as well as you’d like, there’s no reason to be upset.  From the back seat you can never expect anything different than back seat results’. Angela Amado, Partnership Course Leader, Landmark Education

The following is the fabulous group of True Colour Experts who convened here in Vancouver last month:

(From Left to Right, Participants from Vancouver’s course in February) Lisa Wrixon, Lisa Sheridan, Katherine Kinch, Maria Killam, Alison Doyle, Samantha Province, Rita, Ruth Granen, Carol Ann Makely, Linda Pritchard

If you are a stager/interior decorator/designer/homeowner looking to increase your knowledge around specifying colour accurately and with confidence, my True Colour Expert Workshop leaves you with a system that shows you exactly how you and your client can immediately see that you’ve selected the right colour. You will also learn how to explain the ‘why’ or ‘because’ behind your advice. In 3 days you can become a True Colour Expert!

The difference between a professional and the homeowner is that the professional can explain why your choices are correct or why they won’t work for your space.

Linda Pritchard, Carol Ann Makely, designers with La-Z-boy in Calgary and Maria Killam

This course is NOT theory. It is the ‘how to do it’ of colour consulting and distinguishing undertones which is the foundation of every facet of any design project no matter how large or small.

My next True Colour Expert Workshop is May 11 – 13, 2011 and June 23 – 25. 2011. Click here for rates details in both locations.

Here’s what people are saying:

“ I have had two color (colour!) consultations since our Atlanta Colour Conference.  I LOVE it.  After learning your system,  I find that the color chooses you.  When I perform your preliminary color tests with the fan deck, I have a magic wand, too!  After we talk about and analyze the big fixed elements, the client can see perfectly why it is the right color.  Amazing.  The time just flies by.  I am in my creative element, and I can’t thank you enough for setting me off on this wondrous course. Ellen Rhett, Birmingham, AL

“ Just wanted to say three cheers to Maria Killam for not only inventing a rocking system, but for sharing it with us. This is hands down the best system I have found and I have tried quite a few. It really does take the fear out of color picking blind.  Jennifer Duchene, Lift Your Spirits Home Transformations, Palo Alto, CA

“ I’ve specified colors for several clients since I took your class last month.  Thanks to your expertise, I fairly quickly made selections based on UNDERTONES. YAY!!! Beautiful spaces. Thrilled clients. Happy and grateful me!  Working with 2 or 3 new clients each week and really excited about what’s in store.  Stacey Guest Murphy, Homestretch Designs, Atlanta

“ I came home and picked out my house colors in about 1/2 hour.  What I learned and the references we put together in your class made the choices almost obvious! Hannah Dee, Hannah Dee Interiors, Philadelphia, PA

If you don’t have time to conduct 1,500 consultations like I did to discover the colour system which will give you the confidence to work with colour in your home or with your clients, this 3 day workshop will put you in the driver’s seat of your design career right now!

Love this analogy, and I cannot endorse Maria's course enough. If you believe in your business, invest in your success and stop wondering if you are picking the right color. Pay up Show up and apply results. Confidence is 90% of why people will chose you to color and decorate their home.

wonderful analogy! When I come to Canada, I'll come to your course 🙂 I remember so clearly before I starting my blog I read your post "Start with why" and saw the video. I'm sure you started with your why and the people feel this when they come to you. Lovely greetings to you,Maria from Maria 🙂

Maria, thank you for this insightful prompt to have a true-up on how my own career and life is going. It made me ask myself several questions: Am I where I want to be? What am I in charge of in my career? Am I the driver of my happiness? How much back seat driving do I do in my marriage? Eek! My poor husband…
Great tip, I'm not a designer and I'd love to do your course!

Maria, I would love to take your course if you ever are in the Grand Rapids, MI area (or I'll even travel to Chicago, which I love as much). I would also love to have your opinion on a book entitled "Color Saves The Day" by Lucianna Samu published by Creative Homeowner. It seems very informative and well put together but would love YOUR opinion as I do regard that highly. Thank you!!!

    Maria,

I love coming here and learn with you. That's an amazing feeling and I know you prepare posts like this one with that in mind, to help your blog friends. You always achieve that with me.

Love your outfit! Oh, la, la! 🙂

Maria..I'm sure you must be so pleased to know that your attendees took so much away from your conference. Great feedback!

I know one thing, when I decide to head towards my fabric art business..which will happen one day..I'm going to have to take a class. By that time, I'll be living in Seattle! (Lots closer than Texas. )

For now, I'm working on my first 'paid' fabric art design. The fabric will arrive by UPS tomorrow..and I'll be able to start sewing The Colorado Rockies.

Knowing undertones would help me so much when I'm trying to choose hand-painted batiks..and make sure the colors 'go' together. Right now..I just guess. So far, I guess pretty good..but I'd rather not have to!

    Lovely news from your workshop!
