What is Love to You?

By 02/13/2010January 23rd, 201740 Comments

We only regard those unions as real examples of love and real marriages in which a fixed and unalterable decision has been taken. If men or women contemplate an escape, they do not collect all their powers for the task. In none of the serious and important tasks of life do we arrange such a “getaway.” We cannot love and be limited. Alfred Alder

Is that a good argument for commitment and marriage or what? When I was younger I used to think love was all about chemistry. Now I say marry your best friend and then you’ll be happy for a long, long time!

Tell me who admires and loves you, And I will tell you who you are. Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve

Happy Valentines Day my lovelies!

  • Tracy @ Comfort and Luxury says:

As someone with the experience of having been married more than once, I feel qualified to say yes, absolutely, you must marry someone you like as much as you love. Admiration and respect are every bit as important as chemistry and heat. A favorite quote goes something like "Love is friendship that has caught fire".

  • Marija says:

The last quote, I adore it. Happy Valentine's Day!

  • ~mott says:

Oh yes, Maria–I couldn't agree more! It is wonderful to have fire and friendship but I am getting to the age that the friendship means the most. Somehow that didn't come out like I meant it! Hopefully, you know what I mean. The passion is still there–it's just the friendship continues to grow to the point of finishing each other's sentences, thoughts, etc. And Tracy @ Comfort and Luxury–I love the quote 'Love is friendship that has caught fire'! Think I'll borrow that one this V-Day!

  • Roxy Te Owens says:

I love the last quote as well! 🙂

I'm marrying my best friend this year and he has the top two qualities that I've been looking for – kindness & compassion. Oh, and he's cute too! And he has an eye for colour – gotta love that! 🙂

Beautiful, insightful quotes. It is the friendships that nurture our souls and sustain us. I have loved the same man since my early twenties. He is out of the country, but near and dear to my heart today and always.

Good point. We are not planning a bank heist, so going into marriage with a "getaway" plan does seem a bit disingenuous. 🙂

Happy Valentine's Day to you, too, Maria! Love that picture of the pink and red room – I've always loved that combo. You have to be a pretty spicy person to pull it off!

  • Ideezine says:

    Maria,

    Happy Valentine's Day!
Love is being with a person in life that allows you to bloom and grow and someone to catch rainbows with in life's ebb and flow.

Someone who laughs and strives to improve him/her self, strives for balance and shows a deep rooted kindness towards others and is a blessing to have in a crisis. Love is two half's that fit together perfectly to make a whole brilliant heart and life together.

  • Lauren says:

awwww ok so loved this post and got teary-eyed at Tracy's quote. beautiful.

I really agree that beyond all the chem you have to enjoy your time together: doing fun things, travelling, working, living, etc.

    happy valentine's day maria!!!!

  • Appletree says:

If we feel that way about marriage why wouldn't we want it for everyone? Sorry to get poilitical. But on this day we should practice loving all of gods creatures, gay or straight, black or white, christian or muslim, jewish, …

  • Maria Killam says:

    Hi Appletree,
I completely agree. That quote resonated with me because I think it applies to any area of your life (including relationships) where you decide to throw your hat over the fence (meaning there is no going back) and truly get committed. That is way more powerful than sitting on the fence!!

    Thanks for posting your opinion!!
    Maria

  • Between you, me and the Fencepost says:

I believe that's why marriage is so relevant to those 'living together forever couples'. Marriage is the institution of 'as long as we both shall live'. Living together is done with a foot out the door. Now, the argument is: how seriously will one take their marriage vows is a whole other post . . . .

  • Trädgårdsmakaren says:

I fully agree, be a good friend and you will have one – right there:-)

  • Gwen says:

Happy Valentine's Day to you too.

The only time that love has really worked for me was when we were friends first. If there was only heat, that heat always went out eventually and I was left in the cold;)

  • colorchic says:

What a great post! I agree marrying your best friend is best, and someone you trust with all your heart!

  • Just A Girl says:

Oohh I'm saving those quotes! We've been together so long, but I still love the little things. Like I got my hair done the other day and we were walking to the car from dinner and it started raining and without saying anything he took off his hat and put it on me:)

  • A Gift Wrapped Life says:

I went for the chemistry and my best friend. After a 39 yr. love affair I am beginning to think I must be right. Love is a funny thing.

  • AB HOME Interiors says:

I married my best friend. He drives me crazy! Sometimes good sometimes bad but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Our anniversary is in April and we will be celebrating 10 years!

  • Jess @ Frugal with a Flourish says:

Happy Belated Valentine's Day, Maria! I love the advice! I am marrying my best friend and partner in crime in October. If it wasn't for his support I wouldn't be taking on a new chapter in life. I'm very grateful and lucky!
