How to bring the Sun into a Dark Bedroom

How great is this? In our room at the Vintage Park Hotel where we stayed early this week, the sheers were a soft shade of yellow. On a gray and rainy day though (which it was when we were there), the light coming through feels happy!

I had to share this with you because it’s such a great idea. These are what the rooms look like in this hotel (below). It’s no wonder I love to stay here. Such happy colours.

Vintage Park Hotel

This is their cozy lobby (above) where they serve complimentary wine and sangria from 5:00 – 6:00 pm every day to their guests.

Love the outdoor patio of this restaurant. How fabulous to match the flowers to the umbrella! It immediately makes it look upscale and expensive (which it is!).

Okay this is a silly one but having dinner in Purple I had to snap this fun photo of the orange and yellow cab and it goes with the happy theme of this post 🙂

Have a Happy Summer Weekend!

love the taxi cab pic at the end of your story…it makes perfect sense to me! so your own place will be yellow and pink..a nicer combo than the hot colors of orange with yellow i think. waiting for your post on the new living room maria!

  • Grace @ Sense and Simplicity says:

I love the yellow and orange taxis and the yellow bus that compliment the post – so nice of them all to pose for you. Initially, I thought the first picture was a photo of some sandy hills somewhere, until I looked closer and realized they were blankets. I can totally see why you love the hotel – gorgeous.

    Great Post Maria!
I will have to try these tips in our cave of a bedroom. Thanks!

Favourite mix, orange and yellow, love color matching umbrellas & flowers, and the matching cabs is too fun, In a restaurant called Purple ooh I love it.

  • Room Decorating Ideas says:

I love the warm, happy colors. I'm looking for a color to decorate a dark bedroom with, and these warm yellow-orange shades might look nice.

Is the Vintage Park Hotel a Kimpton Hotel? I used to love staying at the Pacific Palisades Hotel when I went to Vancouver. I'm heartbroken that it's gone now.

  • Annie Wilcox Designs says:

I too have a very warm but very dark bedroom the walls are leather colored. Instead of white sheers, I could try this. Thanks and I am glad you had good time.

  • Karena says:

Wow fabulous place to stay, I love it Maria!

I knew right away that was a Kimpton hotel. They have a way of embracing color and making their hotels feel happy.

Adore that eating area with the matching umbrellas and flowers – the black trim and planters set them off so well and give an elegant feel – gorgeous!

I'm redoing my house with alot of orange. It's just a happy color and it makes me feel good to be around it. I think the psychology of color is so interesting. Was this in Seattle when you were there? I'm wondering if they chose these colors to counteract all the dreary weather?

  • chanteusevca says:

You have convinced me, Maria! Going to replace our dark burgundy drapes in the living room with happy, bright, oranges and yellows and echo the artwork that my husband loves hanging over our sofa. Why we've had these dark burgundy drapes all these years, I'm not sure, but they are out of here! Loved those photos of the bedroom and the patio with all the gorgeous orange! Did you design this place? And the orange and yellow taxis and bus were fun too.

  • Ruthie's Renewed Treasures says:

You are too fun! So great to read your posts. The first thing I noticed was the bus in the background in that one picture and then read on where you said "isn't it fun that the bus is in the background." It really made the shot look fab. Orange is one of my favorite colors too! It puts me in a good mood and makes all things right with the world. You are so right that matching the flowers to the umbrella makes it look so classy, sophisticated and expensive!

  • Between you, me and the Fencepost says:

How did you find such a lovely hotel? The room is beautiful and the wine and sangria served to hotel guests daily is pretty fun.

  • Dale at Hospitality Re-Defined says:

What a great Hotel. I know Seattle pretty well but I was not previously aware of this Hotel. Great character, which I love.

  • Mona Thompson says:

I love the orange flowers and umbrellas. Very clever repetition of color.

  • I'm not usually an orange fan, but I'm crazy about the orange umbrellas to match the flowers! And I laughed out loud at the taxi conclusion! You colored me happy!

  • MIchelle says:

One thing I've noticed is that people are drawn to the same colors as their "season", complexion-wise, as detailed in the classic book Color Me Beautiful. Maria is clearly a "spring", from looking at her photo, which means she looks best in colors with a warm yellow undertone. I am a "summer", which means I look best in colors with a cool undertone. And that explains why Maria loves orange and yellow, and I hate those colors, especially orange!

  • Donna says:

I adore the bright orange and yellows in these photos! Your hotel is really 'happy' looking for sure!

I love orange but can't imagine decorating with it. The marigolds are beautiful. Thanks for sharing your knack for seeing beauty with us.

I painted our sons' room a bright, light orange for this very reason. Love it!
