Colour me Happy in the 80’s

By 05/28/2011January 26th, 201729 Comments
This weekend I am in Abbotsford helping my mom pack up the house I grew up in since I was 12, I’ll be 44 in just a little under 2 weeks–eeeeeek! I just packed up the photo albums and took a little trip down memory lane at the same time. When I came across a photo of me in this colour me happy outfit, I had to post it.

Photo from family archives

Haha, look at my hair which I regularly permed back then!  I’m guessing I was around 23 or 24. I haven’t played the piano in so long, my music must be lost here somewhere too!  I wore those big glasses in the 80’s so I am resisting the new trend coming out now, although from looking at the albums, they are not as big now as they were back then!
Did you perm your hair in the 80’s?

You are so pretty, perm and all. I only had one perm in my life and that was by my Mom, a tony in the 1950s. I was very protective of my hair so I never permed it!!! You my dear are a doll in the 80's and now too, Happy weekend, Kathysue

  • Jennifer, Decorum says:

Absolutely, I was one of the original BIG hair girls. Loved my perms. And that outfit! Obviously you were always a Colour freak, Maria. Enjoy your trip down memory lane.

    Jennifer xx

  • Sheila Zeller says:

Oh yes… do you remember the spiral perms for long hair? Well that's what I had in the late 80's, early 90's! Eeeek is right 😐

  • Dane says:

I had perms too but it was in the 70's. They were horrid.

Then in the early 90's I got what was called a Pyramid perm. It gave you ringlets (like a porcelain doll).

  • Kristie at The Decorologist.com says:

i started getting perms in 2nd grade – yes, 2nd grade. until i was 22 yrs old – the last several were spiral perms. i really wanted a lion's mane . . .

    you looked darling, btw!

  • Neena says:

I am an 80's girl myself.

And I love your hair – then and now.

    Very nostalgic!

  • De tout, de rien says:

I certainly did, as my university grad picture can attest! I loved perms, you could literally just wash and wear! No fuss, no muss. You looked great with your perm.

I suspect if big glasses are coming back, so are perms! My daughters love the eighties fashion comeback like leggings and I just look at this stuff and think, I can't do this again, not twice in a lifetime! Been there, done that!

Once. I have tons of hair. I looked like a clown….I tried hot oil treating it to relax it to no avail…

  • Kellie Collis says:

It's always fun to go back in time. Have a beautiful week ahead, Kellie xx

  • Jil Sonia McDonald - Interior Designer says:

oh gosh, you look so beautiful then, and even more beautiful now.
How are you coping with moving your Mum out of your childhood home, it must be tough!

And yes, I tried a perm once, I told the hairdresser I want a soft wave – came out with a poodle perm! Never again 🙂

  • Naturally Carol says:

I never had perms then because I've always had wavey hair which was fine until straight hair became the way to go! You look much younger than 26 in the photo.I thought you were only about 16..no wonder you look younger than 44 now! I did notice that you must have liked yellow back then too..wearing a yellow skirt..which looked great. Have a lovely week!

  • http://pimpmybricks.wordpress.com/ says:

Perms? Oh god yes. My (now) husband who knew me then calls it my Poodle Period.

44? A mere bagatelle! Especially when you're as full of vim and vigour as you seem to be.

  • dimi says:

You certainly don't look like 44 my dear! Wow! Great 80's look btw! Love the hair!! It was out of pure luck that I was born on 1980, so I didn't have much hair to perm at the time!! I still have lovely pics of me in parsley patterned pistachio green pants and a matching jacket though! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

(p.s. – I have an open jewellery giveaway at my blog, if anybody likes some new bling!)

That pic is adorable and you haven't changed — still beautiful.

On another note — will you provide the answer to Monday's quiz soon?

  • Avad Fan says:

I absolutely permed my hair, but your hairdresser was better than mine. Love the big shoulder pads on the colour me happy jacket. What a babe! Thanks for the smile.

What an informative photo. It demonstrates that over time some things change (your hair style), while others remain constant (your love of yellow with pink).

  • pretty pink tulips says:

    Maria,
I love it!!! I have such a similar picture…permed hair, at the piano (a favorite pose of my parents)….and will also turn 44 in a few weeks. So we're both June babies!!

You look gorgeous today, just as you did back then!!
    xo Elizabeth

  • Lynne Allard says:

you look beautiful! I think we needed the perms to balance out those shoulder pads :). Lynne

  • Pangaea Interior Design, Portland says:

Oh, I admire your courage! How many of us would have the nerve to put up a photo of ourselves during our "perm phase" …. oh yeah … had the same one you did!

  • mrsben says:

    How cute you are!
One can never forget the eightys. I loved the large eye glasses. Was never a fan of perms; though I use to braid all my hair for the 'kinky' look (it was long) which helped balance out those humongous shoulder pads. 🙂

  • Marisa says:

You are so pretty in that pic – '80's hair and all….I had the same style just in brown.
I so wish I could come to your Colour training in Toronto but I have a huge installation on the 3rd and therefore cannot attend. Good luck and maybe next time!

  • Lidyll says:

    Just found your blog!
    …and I like it*smile*

    Beautiful 80s picture of you*smile*

    Best whishes!

  • Sjn says:

yikes, yes, but just once. Now I straighten it, ha!

  • Donna says:

Maria..I've done that hair..that dress…and the big glasses. Never again!! Especially the glasses! LoL!

    xo

  • Peggy and Fritz says:

Oh gosh yes! All through high school and college it was big and hairsprayed not so pretty!

  • Laurie says:

Oh yes I was a perm queen. I have embraced the large glasses coming back. But it is the perms that I am resisting. Thanks for being brave and posting your pic- you are adoarable

  • Priceless!! I permed my hair, and really, who didn't? And of course it was big hair, too. Lol. Now I wear it so short and tailored. You did the 80's well, my friend! And I'll bet you were so cute in those glasses. Speaking of the new come-back of the bigger frames — I think the larger take on the old Rayban Wayfarers (I think that's how it was spelled) is a bit ridiculous looking. I just can't go back there. 🙂 Been there, done that!

  • Adriana says:

To be honest, you look exactly the same. Except of course, your perm. You look great and definitely not 44. I myself am 43 and I still pinch myself because I remember my teen years as if they were yesterday. I also had the same hair style. Never wore the glasses, however.

  • Lucy V says:

I have happy memories of perms, because I always think of my mum during her perm phase in the 80’s.

Can’t say I ever wanted one myself though.
