Vancouver Colour Consultant: The New Orange for 2012

By 09/20/2011January 28th, 201739 Comments
This is very similar to one of the new trend colours from the CMG Conference this weekend. We are going away from the tuscan, rusty oranges of the past 15 years to a fresher orange.

I recently chose Buttered Yam for a client to go with this Schumacher fabric for wingback chairs we are getting made for her dining room:

I love creatively mixed chairs in dining rooms. When I was looking for fabrics with fresher oranges, I was at a loss because there’s not many out there in these fresh colours yet. That’s why I had to go to a higher-end designer fabric house to find it.

This is a short post because my connection is slow so I can’t download a pile of photos. I’m back from Texas tonight!

Love it! Love bright and fresh colors. We just bought Amber Glow (Behr), a sweet orange for our baby's nursery's closet! Going to paint it very soon. It's gonna be fun and am glad to know it's on trend 😉

  • Cherri @ SmartyPantalons says:

I love oranges in general and tend to use it a lot, but this one feels too coral, which feels dirty. I hate corals and salmons and I'm not crazy about this choice.

  • Laurie says:

I don't usually like orange as a color in general, but these do look fresh and fun. I do like these fresher oranges over the rusty muted oranges.

  • Nicole says:

    I love it, BUT..in someone else's home.

  • Bruce Barone says:

My kitchen in my loft was painted a very similar color!

  • Wendi @ Classic Chic Home says:

Buttered Yam is a pretty and vibrant color. Orange is not one of my favorite colors, so I'm not likely to consider it for my own home. But, I can see it's potential when used in the right space with dark wood, a few more complimentary colors, and a generous dose of white for balance.

  • Mary says:

It's very pretty but I couldn't do a whole room in it. I could use it to paint a piece of furniture or the backs of a bookcase but that's about it.
I love the fabric you found also.

  • Grace @ Sense and Simplicity says:

I have a cardigan in that shade, but could never commit to anything house related in such a vivid colour.

  • Donna Frasca ♋ says:

I've been using spicy oranges for clients for the main wall color. The bright ones won't go over well.

  • Bryant Park Designs says:

Love, love, LOVE IT!!! It is so fresh and happy feeling. Bring it on!

  • Anonymous says:

I love it! I'm ready for the fresher colors to hit mainstream stores. I go out looking for things in places I can afford, and there's so much muted, muted, muted!

  • Shannon says:

It's so weird I've never been an orange lover but I'm loving it right now. I recently painted my 11 year old daughter's room BM Poolside Blue and accented it with orange accessories and lots of white. The citrusy orange looks awesome with the turquoise blue. It makes me want to add orange in other place of the house.

  • I love orange no matter the shade! I'm doing my daughter's room over in orange with blue and it makes me want to change the whole house! And, it's been my favorite color to wear for almost 20 years.

  • Allison Egan says:

I love the freshness of the new brighter oranges but agree its best tempered with lots of neutrals too!

I love it! Orange is my new crush… and the fresher the better 😉 Though anything that hints at Tuscany is a temptation…

  • Leone says:

Yay, I adore orange. And I much prefer it fresh and clean rather than rusty. And I prefer it over the more pink toned oranges as well. I love the color coral but not on my walls.

  • pve design says:

Goodbye rusty – hello orange sherbet. I love how the colors all seem to be trending brighter and happier.

  • Loretta Fontaine (APPLESandRUBIES) says:

Maria– I adore the fresh orange curtains in the first photo, but the wall would have to grow on me! I bet it would, though – what a pretty color!

Love it. Especially the curtains! I wish cotton chintz would come back in style soon. It's time for more happiness in this world. 🙂

  • Christine @ The Glam Blog says:

I love it!! I have been loving orange for the last few years but this one seems so much brighter & cheery…perfect for right now!! I"ve been seeing alot of orange right now….could it be the colour for 2012?????????

  • Mary says:

    I agree with Cherri,
this one is too coral, salmon looking for me. On my screen the Buttered Yam sample and the orange room are quite different from eachother. The room is brighter and cleaner than the sample, and I do like it better but to be honest I am not into orange. Perhaps in small doses with other colors like the fabric sample. But as a solid wall or large piece of furniture it feels so trendy that I am already tired of it. It just shouts typical "retro" trend to me.

    • KathyK says:

I have buttered yam on my diningroom wall and it does not look as bright of an orange as shown in the picture-rather it has a deepness and a softness to it. Worth the look at the sample in the BM store-it comes in a full size sheet sample.

  • Carrie'sCreations says:

I normally gravitate to a cooler color palette, but this orange is refreshing. I'm not sure I could live with it on a daily basis, but it is really pretty!

  • Beth says:

I've used fresh oranges: a small slice in a door wall glimpsed down a main hall (in my house); behind a client's wall-to-wall bookcase; a large reception wall in a health club; and your buttered yam in a client's office. The client was older and may not have seen the vibrancy like someone younger.

I use Affinity colors tons and don't think of buttered yam as super fresh – I'll have to revisit it since it seems a bit toned down like most Affinity colors.

In my home accent colors are orange, turquoise, and purples have been sneaking in. The foyer and pantry/laundry room were just painted Tempest (AF 590), appearing bluer depending on light shifts. An orange lacquered chair can be seen from there in a more neutral room.

  • diane says:

love it and I can see it paired with another trend I keep seeing..navy. should be fun to see what is in store for next year.

  • Fly Away Home says:

I love orange and use it as an accent color that adds a pop of humor to my living room. I recently recovered my sofas in an avocado green (yes, I'm one of those who STILL likes avocado) and am accenting with fabrics in turquoise and orange. Kravet has some fabulous shades of orange that seem to bring a freshness to a room without being too bossy.

    Great post and thank you!

  • Robyn @ Imperfect Nest says:

I would love to add orange to my front door. Now to convince the husband I am right!

  • mustang says:

I love it! But I am an orange lover. I also like some corals, but definitely not peach or salmon. I use orange as an accent to the blue/turquoise in my home.

  • mrsben says:

To each their own Maria and not debating its a nice colour, I feel it will be one that people will tire of quickly. (Just my opinion and not to offend anyone.)

Have loved Orange forever! When I was in 10th grade I painted my bedroom Dutch Boy, remember them, Zinnea trim and Marigold on the walls. It was insane. Can't believe my Mother let me do it.

    Orange crush makes me smile.

I really love it. I'm not into retro or Mid Cent Mod so I don't find I associate orange with those styles necessarily. Great with blue, as shown in your printed fabric sample. At my previous house, 15 years ago, when the next door neighbour invited us in and I saw her orange hall I nearly fainted. What on earth was she thinking? But now I love, love, love its warmth and sophistication.
