New York Museums or Shopping; Which do you Prefer?

By 05/15/2011January 23rd, 201723 Comments

It’s Sunday morning, pouring rain here in New York and I am not impressed. Had enough rain for a lifetime this past spring in Vancouver.  My roommate for the week Jennifer Duchene from Lift your Spirits Home Transformations wants to go to the Museum of Modern Art and then to the International Contemporary Furniture Fair which is happening this weekend and I am embarrassed to admit that I am more interested in shopping than getting some culture. It seems I am always more concerned about getting to the gift shop in museums than the actual museum itself.

Lately I’ve been obsessed with shoes. My sister Elizabeth says it’s because I don’t shop for clothes anymore now that I have a Stylist but that’s not completely true.  I sneak in the occasional clothing purchase and hope Angie will approve. Like this white and navy polka dot top I bought from The Loft. I am a sucker for polka dots!

Yesterday when I arrived in New York, I dragged Jennifer all the way across town to Miz-Mooz because I’ve recently discovered how comfortable they are and was dying for a kelly green pair.  After about 45 minutes of trying on a bunch, these are the ones I bought:

Then we hopped into a cab and whipped over to Macys because the other top I would like to buy is a yellow one.  Angie recently blogged about one that she bought and the only yellow top I currently own is a t-shirt which is totally pilled. Well we didn’t even get past the jewelry department on the first floor (before we had to leave to SOHO for dinner) because I was like a magpie, attracted to all the bling. Every time I see Kimberly Grigg, from Knotting Hill Interiors in Myrtle Beach (who was one of the designers in my course this week) she looks so elegant and beautiful and wearing the most amazing accessories and fabulous stacked bracelets, I always want to run out and buy some.
After our shopping we met a group of people for dinner who Jennifer had met on Twitter. We arrived a little after 8:00 pm. It was a burger place so I ordered a veggie and resisted the fries.  Remember the really bad cold I had that lasted for over a month?  Well I lost my appetite and 7 pounds (yaay) so suddenly all my dresses fit perfectly and a few spring/summer items that I just love which only fit me when I’m this weight. Sigh. We’ll see how long it lasts. I’m working on it (especially since I posted about where I want to be by the end of this year in my 2011 goals).

Anyway if I’m out and suddenly it’s 9:30 pm, (which is my bedtime) I have to be completely engaged and interested or I will either fall asleep or get up and go home.  So at about 9:45 pm I got into a cab and came back to the Roger Smith hotel where I’m staying.  I pleaded a stomach ache (and it happened to be true) because it’s not like you can tell people the reason you are leaving is because you’re slightly bored. Nothing to do with anyone at the table of course, to be interested it helps if you’re interesting
Stay tuned for more from New York, I’ll be here until Thursday morning and the sponsors of Blogfest have a packed itinerary planned!
Are you a museum person or a shopper? What am I missing here in New York while I’m shopping instead?

    on a rainy Sunday in NYC, I prefer the museums.. isn't everything closed on Sundays for shopping? that is my recollection of going and being disappointed that nothing in SOHO or BOHO etc is open Sundays…. Anyway, you must go to Central Park if the weather lets up…. there's plenty to do and see..mix it up a bit and ENJOY!

    i love new york because you can do whatever you are in the mood for. anything from big museums to vegan kosher chinese food served 24 hours a day. if you feel like shopping, go for it. i am particularly fond of the oska shop on w.broadway. barney's is a great way to spend and afternoon.
    your new shoes are super, thanks for pointing them out!

    I like to do a bit of both, shopping and museuming. Some days I want culture, some days I want to walk the streets and just people watch and drink lattes, other days I want to power shop at all the stores we don't have…so I get it!

    Hope you enjoy your bright and cheery accessories. I am finding the older I get (40) the more I like colourful things. But with a reddish complexion, I cannot wear pink which I LOVE. Blue is my colour.

    I guess I'd pick museums over shopping… For some reason, I've just never been much of a shopper. I go in with my list and come back out with my stuff.

    I love museums…but I did love Seattle's Pike's Place Market. We had a super time there. The kids came home talking about how much they enjoy shopping there. :o)

    I was born on Long Island so I had easy access to NYC. So I would have to say, there's no other place on earth like NYC to shop. Expensive, yes but the sights are amazing! Love it.

    *** Maria, we've travelled sooo much over the years that "sightseeing" is pretty low on my list (since it's hard to top what we've already done & seen!)…. Now that I'm "OLDER", (Ha~ and have LESS "energy/stamina" but MORE $$$), I have a "NEWER" philosophy:

    * SHOP til you DROP,
    * SPEND to the END,
    * BUY til you die…
    …thennnn, it's a fabulous bubble bath (w/ hubby when possible!) & room service for dinner…

    Welllll, IT "works for me!"…

    (* Lordie, am I THAT SHALLLLLLOW?!?!?!? Grins~~~)

    Best to you,

    I love MoMA…we have a shop on the Gold Coast here in Queensland and they have some totally amazing stuff. I think some of their displays are pretty amazing too..so it would be worth a visit! They pretty much have the best contemporary art, so in this case I do sport a bit of museum envy. Love your new stuff by the way..hope you find your yellow top too.

  • Kelly says:

    Love your new shoes!! So pretty just like your orange pair you wore to class. Have a fun week in NY! My favorite thing to do in NY is people watch. Very interesting people out there. 🙂 Thanks again for the great week of learning all about color in Atlanta! Hope to see you again soon. xo

    You are the lucky one!

  • Tricia says:

    The polka dot top is darling and the shoes are adorable. I love, love, love shoes but I have to live vicariously. My feet require, well, let's leave it at "flat shoes." I'm with you on the museums. My museum would be the sights and sounds of NY as you walk the streets and shops. We are all inspired differently.

    Shop til you drop and then crawl!

  • Anonymous says:

    Wow, I hope no one from your dinner group reads your blog!

    Museums help a person get educated and so the whole world opens up.

    Shopping has its value too, but it's temporary.

  • Kimberly Grigg says:

    Maria, your class was DIVINE! I am looking at everything in a much more "colourful" way!

    Thank you for mentioning me in your blog today! I soooo wish I was shopping (and picking out bracelets!) with you in New York today!

  • elise says:

    I love the Rodger William. Go to the MOMA, just for inspiration.

  • mrsben says:

    "Variety is the spice of life" so grasp the moment. With a little planning Maria, you can probably experience the best of both worlds …. shopping and culture. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!

    I like both….! Next time your in NYC go to West Village to eat at The Little Owl and Market Table. Close to Soho – I was just there last month and stayed at the Soho Grand. The girl recommended these two restaurants and they are to die for.
