House Beautiful asks; What’s your Colour Personality?

By 08/14/2009January 26th, 201734 Comments

Tracy from Comfort & Luxury posted her answers to House Beautiful’s quiz from their ‘Color Issue’ which has recently hit the stands, so I took the liberty of tagging myself! Some of you have been tagged so keep reading!

1. What’s the first color you see in the morning? My cream sheers (okay I rent, I would rip down those sheers if this was my house—which it eventually will be, I love it so much).

2. What color are your eyes? Brown (I know my hair is blonde, but my mom has blue eyes and my dad’s are brown, so out of all 4 of us girls, only one sister got the blue ones!)

3. What color do you wear the most? Until 2 years ago when I had my colours done; I wore beige, brown, black and white. Until recently I have been convinced that I could not wear my favourite colours [yellow and orange] but I’m starting to introduce these colours to my wardrobe now and I love it!

4. What color do you never wear? Blue Red – it just makes me look [dare I say it] old.
5. What color do you wear when you want to feel sexy? Black.
Maria Killam, Haley and Stephanie (past trainers at Innovative)
6. What color gets you the most compliments? Turquoise.

7. What color is your lipstick? I will NOT leave the house without lipstick. So even on weekends when I don’t want to look ‘made-up’ I wear some kind of browny/beige lipstick. Without lipstick, I do not look like me!

8. What color was your living room when you were growing up? Burnt Orange, it was the 70’s.

9. What color was your bedroom when you were growing up? Royal blue damask, flocked wallpaper!

10. What color are your sheets? Cream. I have this idea in my head that [pale sheets]are the softest, I love sleeping in buttery soft sheets!

11. What color was your favorite crayon as a child? Red

12. What color is your car? Red

13. What color was your prom dress? Pale Blue (and you will under no circumstances see me in it)!

14. What’s your favorite gemstone? Pearls. (oops I got this confused with birthstone, apparently pearls are not gemstones – I love them anyway)

15. What is your favourite flower? Casablanca Lilies for the scent and tulips. Nothing looks sexier than tulips that are over 3 days old!

16. What color makes you happiest? Sunset Yellow

17. What color depresses you? Any colour in the wrong context can be depressing. When I moved into the house I’m in now, one of the bedrooms was a gray blue and I got depressed just looking at it (I immediately painted it Pale Avocado with BM). However, the same colour on the exterior of a house (fabulous) or in a teenage boys room, with coordinating bedding, etc, great again!
Context is everything with colour!

18. What color calms you? Green – I love it in any shade. And I agree with a mantra one of my designer friends used to have “All greens go together”!

19. What color makes you grind your teeth? Pinky Beige – seen too much carpeting in that colour in my design career!

20. What color would you like to try, but are scared to? Well since colour is what I do for a living, it doesn’t scare me. The colour that is the hardest to get right though? Purple.

you know what? Burgundy is only good for drinking or visiting.

  • Tracy @ comfortandluxury says:

Hi Maria! Thanks for the mention and for tagging yourself!! What a good sport you are! Great post too. Love that you hate burgundy 🙂
I'll check around to see who else plays along. So many of the blogs you tagged are unfamiliar to me so it will be fun to see what they're up to!

  • Jen says:

    Hello Maria,
thanks for getting back to me.
I will let you know when I am done with my color test :).
Since you write color right you must be in Canada. ah yeah Vancouver.
Reading your interests made my mouth water. Oranges chocolate and avocado – love the color combo

  • Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions says:

Some simple questions, but I had to stop and think for a few of them; others I could just name the color right out. Does the House Beautiful website have a key that tells you what the choices mean?

  • Emily says:

Maria, I had to laugh at your answer to #19, Pinky Beige, that you have seen it too much in carpeting. Oh yes, I grind my teeth on that one also. But the laughter comes in with this color because my husband that I have been separated from for many years, kept our home, (I bought a new one), he had it remodeled wanting it to be masculine. Everything was going well with his quest until the paint color was chosen, for the total house, you guessed it, Pinky Beige. He still can't figure out why people chuckle when they see his manly pad. Some times you have too love that color, LOL,,,

  • Kelly (Arte Styling) says:

Hi, Maria! Thanks for the tag. I'll start putting together my "color personality". I have the HB issue, but never seem to do the work on myself. Too busy analyzing my clients!!! 🙂 Should be interesting…

  • DesignTies says:

Thanks for giving my purple door your vote of colour approval 🙂

  • DesignTies says:

I'll play along too, Maria! Looks like a lot of fun!! This weekend is pretty packed up… we're supposed to be painting the house… if the weather cooperates!! But I'll work on my post in the evenings and see if I can get it up by Sunday. If not, I'll work with Kelly to put up our post together some time next week.
Cheers – and thanks for including us in the fun!

What a fun post! It will be fun to blog-travel and see what everyone is posting about THEIR colors!

Thanks for the tip about the Dijon yellow also. I lived in a house with ALL men (4 of them) for years and years and years. My husband died. The kids moved. And I'm getting rid of all of the navy blue, deep green and deep red – plaids, stripes and solids and I'm heading toward something light and pretty (even if I don't know what that is yet).

Thanks so much for your comment on our blog. 🙂

Also (geez… I have blogarrhea of the post), I swapped your yippeeee for a hooray and took your comment… um… comment. I thought it was SO great! And I do feel that way! I'm hoping you don't mind!

    Have a super-fantastic weekend!

  • AB HOME Interiors says:

Yup it's official you suck eggs. I hate being tagged. Nightmares from childhood of slobbery children running at me, screeching as they pushed me over into the chigger ridden grass. TAG YOUR IT! and they would run off with more screeching. AHHHHH! Ok back to reality. F-I-N-E ! I will answer these questions ONLY because it is you, and I heart your blog!

  • Chic Coles (Cole Design) says:

Thanks for tagging us! We will get on this right away!

  • Brillante Home Decor says:

Hi Maria, tomorrow I will be in London, then off to Milan, Venice, Ischia and who knows where else. I would love to participate but…
Also I may not comment on your posts or any post for some time due to dial-up or no connection at all.
    Take care!

As I came across your post, I thought to myself, "Well, I can't make a post about that, I don't want to copy anyone!" But I guess since you're taggin people, it's okay.

    I love your blog!

  • Design Junkie says:

I've been busy lately finishing a project, so I haven't really read that issue. Thanks for bringing the quiz to my attention–I never really realized how much I liked certain colours…..I may have to repaint…

  • Rachel says:

okay, okay, okay, i'll play along 🙂

  • Windlost says:

Love all your answers, which surprised me by the way because you look like a fair-skinned blonde, like me, and in no way could I ever wear orange or yellow! And I have never been that fond of red! But I loved reading your answers because they were all very unique and thoughtful!

Got to love the black for feeling va va va voom….and I agree that green is the most soothing and seems to be easy to work with. My favorite colour will always be blue and I get TONS of compliments when I wear it in shades from navy to sky to turquoise! Blue eyes….!

  • Trell says:

I was having issues, with Live Writer, but my post is up!
