I was so excited to be invited by Lowe’s Canada to be involved in a holiday decorating project this season! I chose my Mom’s front door because it needed some serious curb appeal! Here’s the before picture below:

Momsdoorbefore

My Mom’s door needed some TLC. A new light fixture, front door handle, decorative pots, a new front door mat and of course some Holiday cheer!

Here’s the after photo in the daytime:

lattice

Out of all the door mats, this lattice design is my favourite.

blackdoormat

I also picked up this rubber mat and placed it before the steps on the gravel (not shown). My Mom had one there that kept blowing away. This one is all rubber, heavy and made for outdoor use.
wreath

Here’s the wreath we bought, it’s so pretty all lit up with the garland around the door.

I also picked up outdoor clippings like the Salal and cedar branches  from Lowe’s.

handle

My Mom LOVED her new front door handle. We arrived home from the airport (she had been in Finland for the past three months) around 4:30 PM and after we had dinner she went straight to bed. When she got up jet lagged at 1:30 AM in the morning, she walked right outside to admire her new lights and colours!

lightfixture

The new lantern was also a huge improvement!

And here’s my Mom Hellen (above)! And the door lit up in the early evening (below).

The lanterns are battery operated so they stay on even in the strong winds which we get a lot out here in the winter!

angellights

The outdoor christmas angel got a new turquoise ribbon instead of the red one it came with to coordinate with the overall colour scheme.

Christmas balls are so easy to decorate with and Lowe’s has a wonderful selection of colours to choose from. My favourite is arranging them in between boxwood or any shrub and some holiday greenery. Use large and small balls to mix it up.

Thank you so much to Lowe’s Canada for sponsoring this wonderful holiday surprise for my sweet Mom!

  • Deborah says:

Wow! Really beautiful. I am loving the non traditional red and green. The planters and lanterns are going to be lovely during all the seasons as well.
Looks like mom approved. I just may be the inspiration I needed to surprise a loved one!

  • Jeanie says:

What a lovely welcome home gift. Best of all one your mom can enjoy it all year long with the new doorknob, lantern and front door mat. Ingenious to change the angel’s ribbon to coordinate with your color scheme. I wish Lowes would team up with you all the time. Mom should win the best dressed mom and best dressed door award!

    • KA says:

Looks so nice that I was thinking you should leave most of that up year round! When I lived in Manhattan and they took the lights and other decorations down in January, I was trying not to get depressed…the big bummer was when they would take the snowflake down at 57th and 5th. That would have been nice up all snowy season.

I would remove the most obvious Christmas stuff and leave the happy, door-coordinating colors up. Cute owls; they are adorable.

  • Paula says:

Just gorgeous! I’m officially inspired so I’m off to Lowes myself. Question: how did you secure the garland around the door?

  • Jane says:

Beautiful! How do you attach the balls in the pot? They have to stand up to blustery winter winds here! Thx in advance!

    • Maria Killam says:

I just used the same hooks you buy to hang balls on the tree and twisted them around so they stayed attached!

      • Elaine says:

You’re so fortunate to be able to decorate this much outdoors with your mild winters. Here in the prairies you could easily wake up to a disappearing act – strong winds make short work of decor and tons of snow bury it…always a challenge. Anything I do outdoors has to be secured tightly with pipe cleaners and often spikes in hopes of lasting thru the holiday season. Looks great thou and so does fashionable mom 🙂

  • paula Ryan says:

What color is the green on the door? I love it! And the decorations.

  • Mary-Illinois says:

Oh my! It looks fantastic. I’m glad you explained how you kept the ornaments in the urns secure because I was curious.

  • Sooo beautiful Maria! Mom I’m certain feels blessed to have you for a daughter to make her life sparkle. Her smile and obvious pleasure in that photo probably made YOUR month as well. Reminds me of a proverb I love ……
“(S)he who refreshes others will herself be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25.
    That’s you! Merry Christmas Maria!
    Love, Paula.

  • Joyce B in Atlanta says:

Very nice. The smile on your Mom’s face says it all. Knowing her family came together to get this result must make her so happy and proud. She’s a good Mom.

  • D, Gibbs says:

Just Lovely! Great color choices..right into January. I don’t know about the rest of you but to me, red and green look SO OVER on Dec. 26th!

  • Nancy says:

    Just beautiful!
Your mom is adorable too .
    Blessings!

  • Tammy says:

Love this update! The colors are so great together. I’m going to have to check out my local Lowe’s.

  • Alex says:

Maria – I’m so impressed with how your creativity is just exploding. This is such a pretty, pretty creation. The love that went into it is so obvious. Wouldn’t a lantern on the other side of the door look wonderful? 😉

  • christine derringer says:

The door is super lovely. You and pretty Mom are Blessed to have each other. LOve all your creations.

  • I love the transformation. So cheerful! And that photo of your mom is too adorable for words!

  • Krista says:

Reading your posts and looking at your photos makes me so happy. You’re so great with color. Thank you!

  • Brenda F says:

The doorway looks really great! And your mom looks like a real sweetheart!

  • Thea says:

Is the greenery around the door live? Or artificial with the lights already woven in? Did you use 3M hooks to hang? If it’s live, did you wrap the lights around the greenery and then hang the whole thing? Or did you hang the lights and lay the greenery over it? I am the “handy” one in my house and sometimes get stuck on the “execution”…It looks lovely! My Lowes is cleaned out…I will remind myself to shop at Halloween next year for greenery!!

  • Carol Landt says:

    Maria! Just beautiful!

  • Ange says:

I always love your before and after posts. And this one is a very special transformation. You can tell by your mothers smile she loves her new door.

  • Diane Higgins says:

Because the door was green, you could have easily done the traditional red/green theme, but I LOVE the turquoise and green! It is perfect!

  • Lucy Haines says:

Maria, All I can say is WOW! Just beautifully done. Your mom is adorable and I know how happy you must be to have her home. Now you can go for coffee every morning. Glad Lowe’s asked you to do this so we could view more of your creativity.

  • Cathy says:

    Hello Maria,
Your Mom’s front door and all of the decorations around it look fabulous! I love the 1st mat that you choose. The angel is so pretty.
I would like to ask where you found the 2 black pots? I have been looking for some.
    Thank you,
    Cathy

    • Maria Killam says:

Everything you see was from Lowe’s. The black pots too, although I could not find them on the website to link to they were in the garden department!
      Thanks so much!
      Maria

  • Debbie says:

Love this and I LOVE your style! I am a HUGE fan and have been following you for years now! Would like to know how you hung the roping around the door. I have a ranch home with a hip roof and vinyl siding above door so not sure what to use that will be safe to hang roping for my door. Thanks!

    • Maria Killam says:

You mean the garland? I used large 3M hooks that you can pull off the siding later, my Mom’s siding is vinyl too!

  • Jessica says:

This is so pretty Maria! I love it <3

  • You did a wonderful job! I always love your decorating style. What a nice thing to do for your mother.

  • Gorgeous front entry, Maria! Love the colour scheme and that you created this Christmas décor for your Mom!

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

    Wonderful job.

Merry Christmas to you and to your family

  • Susan S says:

Maria, it is striking! No wonder your Mum loved it. I’ll bet she’d love it if you decorated it for every holiday!
She looks so cute standing in the door and it even looks like you may have “decorated” her too! Hee, hee, hee.

  • What gorgeous holiday decor for a front door! I love that you played off the green color of the door and added in pops of light blue! I love everything about this door, from the garlands to the lantern to the angel sitting off to the side. You did a wonderful job, and it looks like your mother really loves it!

  • LaJuana says:

LOVE this! Blue and green are my colors…have them in one way or another throughout my home. Traveling this holiday season but hope to use some of your examples next year…first thing to do in the spring is to plant some boxwoods or cedars in some pots! 🙂 Thanks Maria! Your mom is most fortunate that you gave her this treat!
