How to Design a Classic and Timeless Mudroom; Before & After

Today I’m sharing a sneak peek of my lovely client Crystal’s house (she is the owner of Studio B Yoga here in Chilliwack) I finished over a year ago, it was photographed and now it will finally be published in May. It features a timeless mudroom.

The main rooms of the house will be featured in the magazine which I can’t show you until it’s published, so I’m starting the tour by showing you the timeless mudroom which had a major transformation and became a much more functional and attractive space.

The “Before” Photos

Here’s the before photos which include the adjoining pantry. This wall was taken out and it became one room with closed cabinets and an area for coats, hats, etc. This was designed by my good friend Jan Romanuk.

The ceiling colour has a purple undertone and it relates to the sectional in the great room this creates flow and it’s pretty fun to have a blue ceiling which always feels like the sky so it doesn’t need to relate to anything in the room.

I have a blue ceiling in my living room and people rarely notice.

Yes we could have introduced a trendy, geometric or encaustic tile, but that would eventually date. Much easier to change out the runner! The light hardwood floors are throughout the rest of the home as well.

Just lovely!!! Beautiful palette, adding some honeyed cognac warmth to the black and white and I love that blue ceiling. Fab!

    HI Maria,

What a great transformation. I clicked the link for the Dash and Albert rug and it came up as the school house light.

Can you offer the correct link?

    Thank you in advance

What an attractive, inviting mudroom. So bright and cheery. I was wondering what flooring you used as I am presently checking out hardwood/engineered flooring for my home. Thanking you in advance.

I LOVE the makeover and can’t wait to see the rest of the home! I’m equally impressed by the way you presented the “before” pictures in your post. A collage of images with a semi-transparent text-box-overlay is a perfect (and safe!) way to show the “before”. It guards against someone finding the image in isolation, linking it to your name, and thinking it might be an “after”. Brilliant idea!

Hi Maria. You & Jan are quite the team. This is a beautiful space & I bet it functions so much better then before. I love the idea of the painting the ceiling blue. I may have to do that when we finally get around to doing our mud room.

Oh my gosh!! This is exactly what I would like to do! I have a mudroom that is right beside my laundry room, which links into my pantry. I would like to make all three small rooms into one large room, which would be way more functional and less… cramped. Going to show my husband STAT!

  • Cheryl says:

Great redesign! Love the blue ceiling. Now here’s the question–what is the white paint color?

  • Laura says:

    I LOVE that blue ceiling!

  • Lucy says:

Fantastic transformation Maria! I love everything about it! Adding the painted ceiling is like a feature wall. So smart! Now you have certainly peaked my curiosity about what you girls are up to next! Can’t wait for the new reveal! Hope it is a TV show! Whatever you do I am sure it will be a success! You go girl!

Beautiful room but I would love to see more pictures – Is the washer/dryer behind cupboard doors? Any chance you could share a rough floor plan? Is vinyl for a mudrooms totally out of the question today for mid to upper level homes? Can you share why you didn’t put in either vinyl or tile as it seems so much more durable in a mudroom (we’re on a couple acres, have dogs and the floor in our mudroom gets alot of dirt). Thanks!

I agree that it is a mudroom for “city folk” without much mud and definitely no farm boots. I would not want to hang my soaking wet barn coat on that beautiful white wooden piece of furniture to drip dry! It is quite beautiful though.

Is it possible for you to share the link to the hardware? So classic and pretty! Thanks!!

Any suggestions for tried and true blues for ceilings in Mudroom entry w/ no natural light? Would you recommend light or dark blue ?
