Colour me Happy with Artist Ian Varney
04/04/2012Last year it was my birthday when my True Colour Expert Workshop was held in Toronto. As a special treat, I got to spend the day with Ian Varney in his studio. Ian uses wax paint which dries very quickly. Oil canvases take months to dry so this is a great medium to use.
Do you Keep the White Elephant? Yay or Nay
03/10/2012Sometimes when a client takes me to an undecorated room to get my advice they will say “Everyone loves this dated lamp, art, vase, chair [insert dated piece here] so I want to keep it and/or build the whole room around it.”
8 Reasons not to Miss out on Pinterest
03/08/2012Did you know Pinterest is one of the hottest social networking sites going? It cut down the time it takes to source images for my blog by more than half – so awesome, and it still took me months and months to finally set up my own boards. What the heck was I thinking??? When…
All my friends and family know better than to buy me ‘what nots’ or ‘tchotchkes’ as a gift. They know it will pretty much not see the light of day in my house. And there are times when I have kept the occasional knickknack out on display for fear of hurting someone’s feelings. For example, I had these little wooden elephant bookends that my mom gave me on my bookshelf for years until my friend Tami said that they were bad luck because their trunks pointed down instead of up. So then I gave myself permission to stick them into the Sally Ann box.
I am helping a client plan a family wall of art. She lives in a house with a spectacular spiral staircase and has a large wall she’d love to use to showcase family photos. Just a pretty spiral staircase, unrelated to art here (source) First we went to Ikea for several sizes of Ribba frames….
Apparently one of the biggest attractions in Wisconsin is Frank Lloyd Wrights Residence called the Taliesin Preservation in Spring Green. We arrived at 11:30 am today so we enjoyed brunch first in the Riverview Cafe where I snapped a photo of the centrepiece on each table. I loved how simple and architectural it was. The Valley…
Creative Art for the Bathroom
11/18/2010source Today I was in a lovely client’s home out in White Rock. She was upholstering an Edwardian Settee and matching chair and wanted to make sure she was on the right track with the colours and fabrics she had chosen. And she needed wall colour for most of the house. By the time I…
I have a confession. I am so tired of looking at my empty walls and (as you know) the perfect piece of art takes time to find so when I was making my weekly rounds at Homesense last week I came across this one for $140 (marked down from $299). Well how could I resist?…
Affordable Art
11/04/2010I fell in love with Shirley’s art when I was clicking on my Baskets & Poodles linky party from last week. I don’t know if all her art is as affordable as the little 5” x 5” paintings that she posts on her ‘One Painting every other day’ blog but here is some of the…
Art post for Week #3; Baskets & Poodles
10/28/2010Okay, I may be the only one in love with this blog party idea of posting inexpensive (or better yet cheap and cheerful) ways to create art for your home. But I really don’t feel like I’m the most creative person in the world when it comes to inexpensive art. Really. I would just love…
What is Beauty? 3 Ways to Know
10/22/2010I attended a very interesting inquiry (called a Wisdom Salon) a few weeks ago at Landmark Education where we could only ask questions, no debating or rebuttals just questions. So first, it was opened by attempting to define beauty, and here are 3 ways to know ‘What is beauty?’: flickr 1. According to the Oxford…
Cheap, yet Happy Wall Art
10/12/2010How about word Art? Best Day Ever by Erin Jane Shop via Centsational Girl Finding affordable art for my clients is one of the biggest challenges in my design business. Clients that hire me do so because they want their home to look finished. And it’s accessories and art that truly turn a house…
Does your Art have a Story?
09/26/2010A lovely friend and past client Rachel Lando sent me a link to these wonderful spaces by Los Angeles designer Kim Alexandriuk in an interview with 1st dibs (Photography credits are on each image). These two images (above and below especially) are so great for demonstrating beige undertones done just right! The sofa and roman…
Who else knows Steampunk Style?
05/07/2010Has anyone heard of this look? Penelope Trunk called me today so excited that she’d just discovered it! As a design blogger, I think I’m so on the edge of ‘what’s happening now’ (maybe not) but I had never heard of this look before and honestly, it sounded like she was talking Latin I thought…
