Which Stone Colour is Best for Your Fireplace Surround?

Screen shot 2012-02-08 at 3.31.25 PM

The stacked stone trend for fireplaces and the exterior of homes is a big one. I have even been in a home where the builder used stacked stone like an accent wall in the entry which was connected to the bi-level stairs. Can you imagine how much that would hurt if you banged into it or your child fell down… Continue reading

Vancouver Motel Exterior Before & After

Occasionally, when I'm driving by a building, if I think it's interesting in some way, I'll snap a photo of it. I took this picture over a year ago because I actually thought the way the "colour blocking" on this particular building actually looked good, especially because there's not a lot of great architectural detail here. And the fixed element… Continue reading

Vancouver Interior Designer: How to Marry Classic Wood with the Gray Trend

Screen shot 2012-02-03 at 4.42.35 PM

Reader Question: "One thing that is not clear to me… with the colors trending from brown, beige, cream to grey, black, white, how do you incorporate grey, black and white when the furniture is wood (cherry, mahogany, whatever)?  Do you just ignore the wood color?  I'm guessing you'll say no.  Do you paint the wood (my husband is frightened by… Continue reading

Screen shot 2012-01-26 at 7.17.04 AM

See this busy, patterned carpet which is all throughout the hallways and classrooms where I attended this workshop the last three days? Well, you can see that the rubber baseboard was selected to coordinate with the carpet (they did the best they could–the standard colours are limited). However, the wall colour should then be a second colour found from the carpet.… Continue reading

Vancouver Colour Consultant: The Best White for Carrara Marble

Screen shot 2011-11-26 at 9.24.33 PM

Since Carrara Marble is so trendy right now, I thought it would help to write a post on which whites work the best with it for your white kitchen or bathroom. Carrara Marble will look the best with a plain white like BM OC-65 Chantilly Lace or Decorator White (below) or even a white with a blue undertone like Pure White OC-64. If you are choosing a standard white from a cabinet manufacturer, just make sure they are close to any of the above and your cabinets will look great. Continue reading

Vancouver Interior Designer: One more Reason You Should Skip Accent Tiles Altogether

Screen shot 2011-11-02 at 1.45.24 PM

There is a new answer that I have come up with recently when clients ask me about the finishes for their renovation or new house. pinterest You'll show me your backsplash tile or countertop for your bathroom and then say: "I'm worried that it's boring." It's the pitfall that many designers (including me until I was in my 647th consultation)… Continue reading

Vancouver Colour Consultant: The Problem with an All-Gray Room

I was recently reviewing the "Gray" chapter in Janice Lindsay's book All About Colour. When I first read it about two years ago, gray was not nearly as hot as it is right now.  Remember when I said in this video that the problem with the current trendy neutral is when people decorate their entire house from top to bottom… Continue reading
