Christmas Spirit

I always decorate my house for Christmas on the first weekend in December and I was helping one of my lovely clients at her house on Friday. We found a beautiful garland from Chintz & Co. with red apples, white berries and green gladiola leaves for the mantle in her great room. The garland was similar to this one, big and lush: flickr We don’t have a mantle above our ... Continue Reading

The Little Black Dress

I thought I’d share with you this site by Gwyneth Paltrow I stumbled upon while blogging one day. You can subscribe to her newsletters where she talks about clothes, menus, travel, etc. It’s like getting a personal email straight from Gwyneth, approximately once a week. Since we are in the season where we all need a cute little black dress, I thought I’d share my favourites from her recent newsletter ... Continue Reading

A Happy Mid-Century Renovation

This is the home of Dee Dee and Hale Hoak featured on Tribeza an on-line magazine. This house is located in the community of Greenway Parks, Dallas and as the community website points out, “For years, residents have found the neighborhood so appealing that homes are often passed down from one generation to the next”. I just loved the accents of colour in this primarily white house and the open, ... Continue Reading

Vancouver Colour Designer; Why is it so hard to choose yellow?

Image from flickr Why is yellow so hard to choose? Because all colours get twice as bright when they get bigger [all over the walls] and it is well known in colour theory that yellow is the first colour the eye sees, it’s simply the brightest. Which is why it has to be toned down (or muddied) even more than the other colours, before it becomes a ‘designer’ yellow on ... Continue Reading

Colour Love

In blogland this weekend I visited Coco & Kelley’s site (which I love) and saw this dining room from Stephen Shubel Design which was featured in House & Garden in 2004. I know I have this magazine around here somewhere because I remember seeing this room then and falling instantly in love with it at the time. I love yellow and orange [and that fresh yellow green to cool it ... Continue Reading

Why is Black a Slimming Colour?

My personal trainer Ruth, at Innovative Fitness asked me the other day if I would do a post on ‘Why black is a slimming colour’. She said “Ever since we got our new uniforms which are these cute black zips, everyone has been asking me if I’ve lost weight.” As if that is even possible cause don’t forget who it is I’m talking to here; my PERSONAL trainer who is ... Barbara Barry’s Philosophy

Barbara Barry I was at Kravet/Tritex at 611 Alexander yesterday afternoon for an open house where they were showcasing Barbara Barry’s new Contract fabric line for Kravet. Then I went online to Kravet’s site and saw Steve Nobel had recently posted an interview with Barbara on his ‘Inspired Talk’ Blog for Kravet: One of the questions he asked her was: What business practices support the success of your brand? And ... Continue Reading

Hans Wegner Chairs

The cool thing about blogging is that suddenly, everywhere you go, you look at the world with new eyes, you take pictures of things that previously you might not have, because every occasion becomes a blogging opportunity. Then you have to do some research and gather information so that you can sound remotely intelligent when you are describing the photos you have just posted. Bottom line: you become a better ... White Kitchen Cabinets for the Most Timeless Kitchen

My favourite kitchen is white. White kitchen cabinets offer the most timeless look and the one you’d least tire of over the years. Pinterest In the hundred’s of homes that I have been in over the last ten years, the obvious giveaway on the age of the home is always the kitchen, and usually it’s the colour of the wood cabinets that defines it even faster. If I walk into a ... Continue Reading

Inspiration for Monday

I thought this quote would be a good way to start the week. It’s one of my favourites by Nelson Mandela. and always gives me the the shivers when I read it: ‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be ... Continue Reading

Vancouver Colour Consultant talks about Colour in Hallways

I was in Park Royal Mall on the weekend and noticed they had renovated one of their hallways leading outside and to the restrooms. I had to take a photo because I thought the blue chosen here was fabulous! Nice tile layout combined with wood panelling and wall sconces. It’s a perfect example of my mantra, “A light colour will never come to life in a dark room!” Here is ... Continue Reading

The New Hollywood Regency

Last night in my colour class, I was having a conversation about interior design styles and one of my students pointed out an image in a magazine of an upholstered headboard in a graphic pattern and I said, “That’s very Kelly Wearstler” who is the queen of hollywood glam and drama. Not everyone knew who she was, so here are some of her interiors: This is one of my favourite rooms ...
