Ask Maria: Is my Roof the Right Colour?

‘Just read your post about roofs. Because our house is in FL, we were advised to go with a lighter roof.  Matter of fact, we may even get more credit on homeowner’s insurance now!   There were not a lot of choices.  This was NOT even the lightest grey/slate color; there was only one darker than this one.  Now, though, the black shutters and door look really dark, in comparison.  Wishing I had chosen the darkest slate color.
That said, we will be repainting the outside, the front door, and replacing shutters, etc.  It’s such a great house, and I want to do it justice.  My husband didn’t want to go with a dark roof, because of our location near the gulf.
How can I pull outside together now???  I loved the bluish grey green color of our house, but may need to change color, and color of shutters too!’ Jeanette L.

Dear Jeanette, There’s nothing wrong with your gray roof, I think it looks great with your turquoise house and terra cotta walkway. You’re right changing the shutters and the front door would make it perfect!

I would paint your front door SW 6691 Glitzy Gold because yellow looks fabulous with orange and turquoise. Or perhaps a darker turquoise like SW 6767 Poseidon.

Your shutters should be a darker charcoal gray like Behr 780F-6 Dark Granite to relate to your roof.

Hope this helps make your house happy!

Maria, since these shutters are the wrong size for the windows, would you advise taking them down completely? Then her only task & expense would be the front door—
(I like the idea of the gold!)

  • Maria Killam says:

The shutters don’t bother me, I think they are the exception here because they are so symmetrical and work with the colonial feel.

  • Kathy says:

Maria I agree with you–I like the roof with the house body color, but the shutters feel too dark and steal the show. By the way, I went to look at the SW colors mentioned and SW 6767 is called Aquarium, while Poseidon is SW 6762 (this looks more teal than turquoise to my eyes). Was Aquarium the color you meant? Thanks….

Maria – Your advice is always so right on. Could you advise us on how to choose a storm door? We would like one that provides additional front door security (we live in a city row house) but that might also allows us to let some fresh air in… Thank you!

I also like the roof color with the body color. I’d love to see the after pictures of the house as well, before and after pics are so great.
    Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

This is such a timely subject for me; my roof needs to be replaced and I just finished painting the exterior colours that a paid consultant recommended but I don’t remember her even looking at the roof. Now I dont know whether to replace the roof in the same colour or start over. Maybe black will be the easy answer…

One more thing..Just read your post, from August, about shutters. Wondering what you wound up doing? Thinking we may go for wood now! Question though..as this is a coastal house, although colonial, what about playing up the beach feel in selection of style of shutter? Louvred, plantation style? Or, more traditional? People stated shutters should be functioning, even if you don’t close them! Maybe there are attractive hurricane shutters out there? Usually made of aluminum though.. Also, since window above door is different from rest, does that still need shutters? Thanks Maria, and thanks to all who responded!!

    • Kathy says:

Hi Jeanette, you could use the paint program on your computer to see what your house picture looks like with the shutters removed on the window above the door (you can “paint” it the same color as the current house body color). You can also experiment with colors for the shutters and door in Paint. Kathy

I have not ordered new shutters yet for my house, just haven’t focused on trying to source them. I would just do raised panel on your house. Shutters can’t always be functioning, I disagree that they should be any bigger on your house, they still won’t look like they close so they are great the way they are in my opinion. Maria

  • IMO, it would look better to take the shutters off the middle window. I think it looks too busy.
