Decorating with Wallpaper; Yay or Nay?

Couldn't this blank wall use some wallpaper? (source)

There are so many creative ways to make a wall look interesting I am always thrilled when presented with yet another magical way to do it.  Thursday night I was invited to a designer event at Mint Interiors on the West side in Vancouver. It's a beautiful home decor store but what I was struck by was the papered walls.

This one is from Trove Wallpaper in New York (where I'll be very soon for Blogfest, in just over a week, can't wait!). The mini cupcakes were delicious, I wanted 3 but stopped at two :)   Love these overscale flowers (below)!

Check out the large sequined wallpaper behind the cash desk (below) from Tracy Kendall in the UK:

Here's a sequined 'dress'
Here is a wall of paper! Talk about a great way to turn a white wall into art!

I stepped into the restroom during the evening and couldn't resist taking a quick snap of the wall of books in an otherwise white and boring little powder room. How great is that?

If you don't have room in your bathroom to create a little 'library' like this one, you can do it with wallpaper also from Tracy Kendall, see all the different ways to create a 'wall' of books.

And my two favourite pals to cocktail with at designer events:
Amber Beall, Maria Killam, Nancy DeVries

Looks like a fun and inspirational event Maria! Generally, I'm not a fan of wallpaper, but these ones are lovely.

Cheers! p.s. having two giveaways this week.

Very interesting solutions to plains walls.
Like the books in the bathroom.
And everyone thought I was crazy to have books in mine

Some interesting ideas for boring white walls! Love wallpaper and there have never been so many amazing choices as there are today…….it is amazing how they can transform a space. I also love how books can change a room….I am big fan of the use of books! Great post.

Love the sequins one! An the birds, and the flowers! LOVE them all.

And how about that bookshelf in the the powder room. Very interesting.

While I am not always a fan of the accent walls these work!

I was a huge fan of wallpaper about 25 years ago and hung it myself everywhere in my home. Then I got into faux finishes and now have only one room in a lovely taupe and cream toile. However, after seeing the new large scale images on wallpaper, I am getting excited about using it again.

I am not a fan of wallpaper…It's too difficult to change…and I'm always changing. Paint is so much easier…and cheaper! And there is so much that can be done with it.
I do, however, love many of the ideas you shared today…the "wall of paper" and the books in the powder room are spectacular ideas.

Those are all so interesting! Loving the sequins! 10-15 years ago I really liked wallpaper, but having removed several layers at past houses and now this house is covered in it, I'm less likely to use it. I think using it as a specialty – like the library-in-the-bathroom, the sequins or a pretty floral – is fine, just not all over the house! I still love that soft yellow with white branches in a previous post.

I used fabric as wallpaper with liquid starch as the glue. It was easy to take down, but difficult to put up and hard to finish the edges. If there is any white in the print, then the wall needs to be painted white first. I was in an apartment and I needed to be able to take it down quick when I moved.

I loved wallpaper in the 80's and then did sponging and ragging in the 90's and early 2000's. Now I'm into just plain walls with beautiful color, although I might go for gloss white soon.

I love wallpaper. I'm so surprised that many people think it's "out". I just installed it in three different projects and all three clients love it!

I'm not sure about having books in the bathroom if it's going to be steamy. But I think I'd rather one wall stenciled with a wallpaper pattern than the real stuff.

very interesting and wow for the little powder room! I'm not a fan of wallpaper but I love seing interiors with wallpaper. My home has always white walls but I decorated the home of my parents with wallpaper :-) Happy weekend to you, Maria

I have been a wallpaper girl forever. There is no substitute for what it can bring to a wall or room. Was that sequin paper actually textured or flat? What a fun look.

I love wallpaper as you can see on my sidebar in my dining room, entry and guest bath. I love what it can add to a room!! Kathysue

I have always loved wallpaper even when it wasn't in. Makes a room feel all dressed up even when you don't have much in it. Love those pics!

I have always loved using wallpaper as to me it is a sure-fire 'economical' way to add color, texture, pattern and interest to a non architectural space. However, as of late since I am in the process of stripping it (a total of 8 spaces); I am having thoughts of reluctance to ever use it again. Not saying though, that I am not going to as 'willpower' is not one of my fortes. :)

I just spent 8 hours helping a friend take the wallpaper off her teenage son's room. It came with the house and she and her son have disliked it the whole time (7 years). She finally took it down because she's selling the house.

The wallpaper stripping solution did not help very much. We had to really hack at the places where too much glue was used. Then we put spackling over the multitude of rough places. I doubt we will do a very good job sanding it.

My friend said she will never buy a house again with wallpaper.

It was a half-wall with a border. I was surprised that the room looked much, much bigger once it was gone. It was like the whole room had been fenced in.

I adore wallpaper! Nothing can so completely change a room or set a mood as a beautiful and unique wallpaper.

When removing old wallpaper, I use a clothes steamer which I have and it comes off quickly and easily. I hang my own wallpaper and I think it is easier than painting with much more dramatic results for your efforts!

I am constantly amazed at the beautiful patterns that new artists can come up with. I will see one pattern and think nothing could ever be more beautiful and then, low and behold, something even more beautiful comes along.
